Don: The Chase Begins Again, the 2006 action film starring Shah Rukh Khan, marked its 20th anniversary. Directed by Farhan Akhtar and produced by Excel Entertainment, the film was a remake of Chandra Barot's 1978 Don starring Amitabh Bachchan. The cast included Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Om Puri, Boman Irani, Arjun Rampal, and Isha Koppikar. It became a significant success at the box office and was notable as a mainstream Hindi cinema remake at a time when sequels were uncommon.
Cinematographer KU Mohanan, in an exclusive interview, reflected on his experience working on the film. It was his first mainstream commercial project, though director Farhan Akhtar had initially harboured some apprehension about his capability. Mohanan, who had primarily worked in advertising films, viewed the assignment as a challenge and accepted it. He collaborated with international action coordinators, including a second unit director from Australia who had experience with Hollywood productions, and most action sequences were performed practically with minimal VFX, which was not yet widely accessible at the time.
Mohanan highlighted Shah Rukh Khan's exceptional commitment to performing dangerous stunts personally. He recalled that Khan drove the car himself during high-speed chase sequences, hitting water barrels and a road roller without using a stunt double. Most remarkably, Khan performed a scene where a car drove through a fireball twice, with a camera mounted on the front to capture his face, demonstrating his willingness to take significant risks. Mohanan described Khan as "the greatest star" he had worked with, noting his professionalism, warmth, and supportive nature on set.
The successful collaboration between Mohanan and Khan extended beyond Don. Impressed by Mohanan's work on the film, Khan engaged him for subsequent projects including Raees (2017) and Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017), followed by numerous television commercials together. Mohanan, who had watched the original Don as a school student in Kerala, found it exciting to work as cinematographer on the remake. He credited the film's climactic twist ending as a major factor in its box office success, noting his enthusiasm upon reading the script and discovering this narrative innovation.
