Director Karan Johar has disclosed that his father would have objected to the film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, explaining that his father held Shah Rukh Khan in exceptionally high regard. Johar suggests he ventured into territory his father would not have permitted had he been alive at the time of the film's creation.

Shah Rukh Khan himself harboured reservations about his character Dev in the film, worrying whether audiences would accept the role. The actor expressed uncertainty about making his character likeable to viewers, reflecting his initial doubts about taking on the part.
