The Dubai International Film Festival, which operated annually from 2004 to 2017, is set to return in December 2027 after a decade-long hiatus, organisers announced this week. The festival became a significant platform bridging Hollywood, Bollywood, and Arab cinema, showcasing both international blockbusters and regional filmmaking talent.

During its inaugural edition in December 2004, the festival launched with a 40-metre red carpet at Madinat Jumeirah, hosting 800 VIP guests and featuring Egyptian actor Omar Sharif in a retrospective honouring his legacy. The opening programme prioritised cultural exchange, selecting a French-Moroccan film about a father-son pilgrimage over a Hollywood blockbuster, and screened 76 films that drew over 13,000 attendees.

By its fourth edition in 2007, the festival had attracted major Hollywood stars including George Clooney and Sharon Stone. The event also became known for hosting high-profile fundraising galas, including a Cinema Against Aids benefit that raised $3 million. Over its 14-year run, Diff became recognised as one of the region's most prominent film festivals, providing a stage where international cinema shared prominence with emerging Emirati, Saudi, and Palestinian filmmaking.
