Prince William, the Prince of Wales, recently met filmmaker Karan Johar in London and praised him as an "icon" during a conversation about the Earthshot Prize, an environmental initiative launched by the Prince in partnership with The Royal Foundation. Johar has been instrumental in helping the Earthshot Prize connect with audiences and partners in India, and William described him as "modest" while acknowledging his contributions to making it "a truly Indian Earthshot Prize"—described as the largest such initiative undertaken to date.
When asked by a journalist whether he had watched any of Johar's films, William said he had not yet but suggested the filmmaker might introduce him to his work in the future. The journalist then recommended Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G), a 2001 family drama directed by Johar and starring Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Jaya Bachchan, and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The journalist encouraged William to watch it and tell Johar of his intention, noting that the filmmaker would appreciate the gesture.
William responded positively to the recommendation, saying, "Okay got it, I'll mention that too when I see him." The exchange was captured during an interview with BBC Asian Network and shared on their Instagram account.
The Earthshot Prize Summit, a two-day gathering of business leaders, environmental innovators, funders, and community organisations, is designed to help promising environmental projects expand. The sixth Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony is scheduled for November 17, 2026, where fifteen finalists will be recognised and five winners will each receive £1 million to develop their environmental solutions.
